Our team brings deep expertise and a strong network in the water sector, and we have developed a roadmap of nanotech applications across the market, including filtration membranes, carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanosensors, and nanofibrous alumina filters. Fresh water is becoming increasingly scarce due to pollution, drainage of underground aquifers and climate change, particularly in developing countries. Recent technological developments provide relatively cheap and highly effective water treatment solutions for the municipal, industrial and household segments. R&D activity in nanotechnology has been particularly active, providing efficient water treatment solutions on a number of fronts, particularly in membranes, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles.
Global water treatment is a $300+ bln market (as of march 2008) five sub-segments. The overall market is expected to grow 3-5% per year in developed countries due to aging infrastructure and tighter regulation. Developing countries expect even higher growth for the next several years, driven by increasingly underdeveloped water infrastructure. Urbanization, industrialization and increasing water consumption to developed country levels will create huge water supply-demand imbalance and, thus, a need for water reuse and filtration infrastructure. High-tech segments, like desalination and filtration, are expected to enjoy the fastest growth due to recent R&D activity enabling production of highly efficient filters at rapidly declining costs.
Areas of particular interest are purification (including desalinization) and wastewater treatment with improved filtration/membranes and other methods; pollution remediation with nano-particles; and sensors that detect impurities. Advances in each of these areas based on nanotechnologies represent attractive investment potential.
